The town of Hampi, on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, was once part of the city of Vijayanagar. The rocky countryside next to Hampi is teeming with abandoned ancient monuments that were constructed from the 14th Century onwards, when Vijayanagar was the capital of a massive empire.  Today, Hampi and its surrounding monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage site.
